Station management

Northern is the Infrastructure Manager at 471 stations. Each of these stations has been assessed in order to establish the risks posed to staff, customers and others who use them. The assessment takes account of issues such as:

• Number of passengers using the station
• Frequency of service
• Line speed and speed of passing trains
• Short or low platforms, or significant platform stepping distances
• Staffing levels
• Train despatch activities
• Specific features such as track crossings
• Overhead / third rail electrification
• Levels of trespass and vandalism
• Level of accidents / incidents

The results of the risk assessment are used to determine the activities and control measures required to ensure a safe environment.
