Huddersfield Art Gallery presents an exciting programme of temporary exhibitions throughout the year, featuring the best of art, craft, photography and sculpture from regional, national and international artists. The permanent collection of over 2,000 works of art includes paintings, prints, drawings and sculpture representative of 20th century British art. Major works in the collection include Francis Bacon's 'Figure Study II', Henry Moore's 'Falling Warrior', as well as works by Stanley Spencer, Edward Wadsworth, and L. S. Lowry. The Huddersfield Narrow Canal boasts Britain's longest canal tunnel, superb Pennine scenery and charming canal-side towns. The rebirth of the canal has become the outstanding success of canal restoration. A journey along the 20-mile canal reveals a waterway of startling contrasts from tranquil countryside to dramatic mills and historic industry. The Oldham Way is one of many walks and trails around the Oldham and Saddleworth area and starts and finishes at Dove Stone reservoir. The spectacular area of Dove Stone is a popular spot for visitors and is easily accessible from the village of Greenfield. The war memorial on 'Pots and Pans' provides magnificent views and to the east is a vast area of open-access moorland where hikers can wander at will up to heights of about 600 metres. Set at the confluence of three canals, the Portland Basin Industrial Heritage Centre tells the social and economic history of the people of Tameside, with permanent, visiting and changing exhibitions.
