There will be changes to rail services between Maryport and Workington from Saturday 29 May. The Department for Transport funded shuttle service between Maryport and Workington will end, as planned, on Friday 28 May following the opening of the road bridge over the River Derwent. The ordinary ‘pre flood’ timetable will be in operation from Saturday 29 May; however, these services will continue to call at Workington North station. To help the local community in the aftermath of the floods the rail industry had also waived fares between Maryport and Workington. From Saturday 29 May passengers travelling to and from Maryport, Flimby, Workington North and Workington stations will need to buy a ticket. Matthew Beeton, Area Director, Northern said: “In the aftermath of the floods the railway provided a vital lifeline for the communities in Cumbria. “Since the bridge opened, we have seen a decline in the number of people using the train services and it is right for us to reinstate the normal timetable and fares, as planned, from Saturday 29 May. “Our services will continue to call at Workington North and, working with Network Rail and the Department for Transport, we will monitor the number of passengers using it to determine the long term future of the station. “I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved from rail employees, local authority colleagues and the numerous volunteers who gave their time and support to ensure that the railway kept local communities connected in the aftermath of the floods.” Detailed timetable and fare information is available: · on posters at stations · at Workington ticket office (or other staffed stations) · by using our Journey Planner · by speaking to one of the Northern team on 0845 00 00 125. |
