Northern has named one of its trains ‘Lancashire DalesRail’ after the popular walkers’ rail service that travels through the Dales linking Lancashire with Carlisle.
The Lancashire DalesRail service has been running since 1975 and is considered one of the best ways to spend a Sunday! The service links Lancashire with Carlisle, travelling through the Ribble Valley, Yorkshire Dales and Eden Valley.
The train, unit 156464, was named by Matthew Beeton, Area Director, Northern; Richard Watts, Rail Officer, Lancashire County Council and Howard Hammersley, Leader of the Rail Ramblers Association.
Matthew Beeton, Area Director, Northern said: “The Lancashire DalesRail service has been running for over 30 years. It is a fitting tribute to name a train after the service that has brought so many people to enjoy the beautiful scenery that the Dales have to offer. It is also a great credit to everyone involved in making it so successful.”
Richard Watts, Rail Officer, Lancashire County Council said: "DalesRail is a successful partnership between Northern Rail, Lancashire County Council, the Clitheroe Line Community Rail Partnership and the Lancashire Rail Ramblers. This year over 170 guided walks will be led by volunteer walk leaders who devote thousands of hours to making DalesRail a huge success. We look forward to continuing this successful partnership in the future and to making DalesRail one of the premier recreational services in the country."
DalesRail attracts many walkers, offering unrivalled opportunities to enjoy dramatic scenery and visit a variety of towns and villages. From Clitheroe trains run to Hellifield where they join the Settle – Carlisle line, crossing the famous Ribblehead Viaduct, passing through Blea Moor tunnel and over the top of Dentdale and Garsdale before entering the more pastoral Eden Valley.
With an extensive programme of guided walks and a number of connecting bus links that enable further travel into the Dales, the DalesRail service offers a host of opportunities to explore this stunning area of the country.
