Passengers in Cheshire are benefiting from improved security thanks to a partnership between Cheshire East Council, Cheshire West and Chester Council, Crewe to Manchester Community Rail Partnership, Mid Cheshire Community Rail Partnership, Northern and Alderley Edge Parish Council, to fund improvements at five stations.
Alderley Edge, Congleton, Sandbach and Northwich have all benefited from the installation of CCTV, while Disley now has a help point on each platform.
Lee Wasnidge, Area Director, Northern, said: “These improvements are a perfect example of how a partnership approach can deliver real benefits for rail passengers.
“These stations provide a vital role in linking communities. Measures such as CCTV and help points counter anti social behaviour and crime, providing customers living in and visiting Cheshire with a safer station environment.”
Cheshire East Councillor, Jamie Macrae, Cabinet Member with responsibility for Prosperity said: “As commuters, we all want to feel safe when we travel. This improved security can only seek to ensure everyone using Cheshire’s stations does so with confidence.
“Cheshire East Council is committed to working in Partnership with all Public Transport operators that serve the Borough to improve the experience for the travelling public.”
Cheshire East Councillor, Brian Silvester, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member with responsibility for Safer and Stronger Communities added: “Cheshire East Council gives the highest priority to ensuring that residents and visitors can travel around the Borough in safety.
“This latest partnership initiative will make our local railways even safer and more attractive to the leisure and business traveller.”
Cheshire West and Chester Council Environment Executive Member Neil Ritchie said: “We are delighted to be working with our rail industry partners and to have delivered real improvements for Northwich Station. Only by working in partnership and through the pooling of resources are we able to achieve this. We therefore look forward to continuing with our strong partnership arrangement and to successfully securing further station improvements.”
