Northern is celebrating after winning the transport sector category at the UK’s top safety awards.
The Royal Society of Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) chose Northern as the winner of the Transport, Storage and Distribution Sector award for 2009. Northern also secured its second successive Gold Achievement Award.
The awards recognise organisations that have demonstrated the best health and safety management performance within their specific industry sectors.
Northern was judged on how it manages safety, including demonstrating effective safety leadership and how it works in partnership with trades union representatives.
David Rawlins, RoSPA awards manager, said: “Northern Rail has shown a commitment to protecting the health and well-being of its employees and others. Entering the RoSPA Awards reinforces the message that good health and safety is good for business, and clearly demonstrates an organisation’s dedication to improving performance in this crucial area.”
In addition to picking up the transport sector award, Northern is one of just three organisations selected from the 22 sector winners to be considered for the prestigious Sir George Earle Trophy. RoSPA awards this to the company or organisation that has achieved outstanding performance in occupational health and safety.
Heidi Mottram, Managing Director, Northern said: "These awards are fantastic recognition of the commitment of everyone in Northern, in partnership with our trades union colleagues, to ensure we achieve and maintain the highest safety standards for customers and employees.”
