Northern is celebrating after scooping a top national award at the prestigious Eversholt Rail Business Awards in London. We won ‘PR Campaign of the Year’ for ‘The Northern Film Challenge’, the latest innovative campaign in our highly effective community programme to educate and encourage young people to stay safe on the railway.
The Northern Film Challenge is an industry-first partnership that gives young people a unique opportunity to produce powerful, emotional films about railway safety that speak directly to their friends and peers.
Northern worked with schools and colleges to challenge teams of 14 to 19 year-olds taking a new vocational qualification to research, film, produce and edit a three to five minute film to encourage their peers to keep out of trouble on the railways. The films are now used as part of Northern’s community programme.
We also claimed Highly Commended citations in the Train Operator of the Year, Internal Communications of the Year, Marketing Campaign of the Year and Station Excellence categories.
Heidi Mottram, Managing Director, Northern, said: “The Northern Rail Film challenge has a serious purpose in highlighting the impact of crime and vandalism on the railway network and we are delighted to receive national recognition for our efforts to generate awareness amongst young people of the importance of behaving responsibly on the railway.
“We are extremely proud of these accolades which are testament to the tremendous support and hard work put in by everyone at Northern.”
Suzy Alderson, Executive Director at Young People’s Enterprise Forum said: “The Northern Rail Film Challenge is an excellent example of how businesses can directly benefit from working with schools and colleges. Funded through Yorkshire Forward’s Embedding Enterprise in Education Programme, this project has given Northern a powerful and effective way of communicating to young people and we are delighted this has received national recognition. The Young People’s Enterprise Forum hopes to encourage more businesses to follow Northern’s lead of bringing learning alive and helping young people develop essential enterprise skills whilst meeting key business objectives.”
