Northern has been recognised as a well-managed business that is committed to improving the quality of its operations to benefit customers and employees.
The plaudits came from the North of England Excellence Scheme, which aims to inspire and encourage organisations to drive towards business excellence by making sustainable improvements.
The North of England Excellence Scheme awarded Northern a Continuity Marque for its continued commitment to putting in place the right people, resources and plans to deliver a successful, growing railway for passengers across the north of England.
Northern runs 2,600 trains each day and has attracted 34% more passengers since it started four years ago. Punctuality has also improved from 83.7% in December 2004 to 90% of trains on time in the last 12 months.
Heidi Mottram, Managing Director, Northern, said: “We’re delighted to have achieved the Continuity Marque in recognition of our commitment and our ambitions for excellence across all areas of the business. This is a major accolade for Northern, and recognises our commitment to quality standards.”
David Teale, Chief Executive, North of England Excellence said: “I am delighted that Northern Rail has achieved the Continuity Marque in the Marques of Excellence scheme.
“This builds on the Achievement Marque Northern Rail has already received. This independent accreditation demonstrates Northern Rail’s absolute commitment to excellence and to continuous improvement. I wish them every success as they continue to develop excellence and quality strategies within the business.”
Northern Rail has adopted the European Foundation Quality Management (EFQM) model as a basis for auditing activities, processes and results against a recognised benchmark.
