NEW AUDIO GUIDE TO SETTLE AND CARLISLE RAILWAY LINE

The Settle - Carlisle railway line is renowned for its stunning views but passengers will now also be able to enjoy an audio commentary as they travel along the picturesque route.

In what is thought to be a ‘first’ for a train journey, journalist and BBC Radio 4 presenter Mark Holdstock has teamed up with Northern Rail and the Friends of the Settle – Carlisle line (FoSCL) to produce sound commentaries for the famous journey.

The mammoth task involved writing the text and then making it fit with the timings on both the north and southbound journeys. Together with commentary about Settle and Carlisle stations there is a total of four hours of carefully timed recordings.

The audio guides are available as free MP3 downloads from the FoSCL website at http://www.settle-carlisle.co.uk/download_audio.cfm

They are also available pre-loaded on MP3 players available to buy at Settle and Appleby station shops. The guides are available in sections so you can listen to as much or as little as you like.

Mark Holdstock said: “The line is one of the railway wonders of the country, if not the world, and it has been a privilege to be involved with this project to bring it to life. I remember the closure proposal being rejected, and the success of the line with both local people, tourists, and with freight traffic has proved what a wise decision that was. Hopefully these guides will help even more passengers to discover the beauty of this seventy-two miles of unique railway.
