Bob Parmley, station supervisor at Appleby is set to hang up his dispatch baton after welcoming customers to the station for over 17 years. Not for him a quiet life of retirement though, Bob is off to be the ‘big cheese’ after setting up Appleby Creamery Ltd with two former colleagues. The new business will be responsible for producing four tonnes of high quality hard and soft cheeses from local herds every month.
Bob started working at Appleby in 1990, not long after the announcement that the Settle and Carlisle line would not be closed after all. He has witnessed the resurgence of the line from near closure to today’s 24-hour operation. As a member of Friends of Settle and Carlisle he will still be heavily involved in the route even if his day job takes him away.
Bob said: “I’ve been interested in the railway since childhood so I relished the opportunity to work at Appleby and I haven’t regretted a minute of it! It’s been great to see the Settle and Carlisle line come back from brink of closure to the thriving route it is today.”
“I’m looking forward to the new challenges of running the creamery, however, I will miss my colleagues and customers- not least answering the $64,000 question – when is Appleby Horse Fair!”
